In 1988, our founder, Fred Helou, left his home country of Lebanon to immigrate to the United States. In the process, all his money was stolen when he was pickpocketed at the airport. With nowhere to go but up, he secured a job as a salesman. After demonstrating untapped potential, his boss mentored him, equipping him with programming skills and a background in electronics.
During a business trip in 1999, Helou was struck by an idea for a digital booking platform when he found himself in need of a haircut and realized it would be really convenient if he could find a business in the area and book online. However, he put the idea on the back burner to focus on his family & career. In 2008, the Great Recession cost Helou his job, like so many others. It was the perfect time to pivot and invest his time & energy into his idea for digital salon booking software. He immersed himself in the salon world to learn about pain points and ways to make the application a more robust, all-in-one solution. Eventually, Vagaro expanded to include features for the wellness & fitness industries.
Vagaro began in our founder’s guest bedroom closet. Today, over 20 million people use Vagaro to find local beauty, fitness & wellness professionals. We're proud to have over 174,000 professionals using our software to run their businesses, and we listen to our customers' feedback & feature requests.
